I sincerely hope you enjoy your summer break! Would love to hear of anymore “beach reads” you enjoy--I’m also guilty of reading too much serious stuff and would like a few light reads for my family’s Lake Michigan vacation.
sounds excellent! can't go wrong with "Cloud Atlas." "The House at the Edge of Night" is probably the Platonic ideal for beach books. if you want some darkness to cut through the sunshine, "The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle" is knife-quick and sharp. also, Patrick Rothfuss is ALLEGEDLY releasing a new novella in the Kingkiller Chronicle series (!) in November (!!!) so anytime between now and then is a good time to (re-)read "The Name of the Wind."
Whaaat Rothfuss is actually writing again? Not gonna lie I have mostly given up hope of him actually finishing the trilogy...but I’ll take a novella at least.
Dropping in to report that I read The House at the Edge of Night and thoroughly enjoyed it. (Didn’t even make it to the beach before I dug in).
Not sure if this is a normal reaction but I was saddened at the arrival of modernity to the island, even though that’s part of what drives the plot (and modernity is inescapable, right? …unless we can jump ship and find some different paths that make more sense…and here I go turning a discussion of a beach read into a mournful discussion on the woes of modernity.)

whew! this has been a vigorous and refreshing bullying session. shall we brainstorm more backhanded compliments and meet up again in the comments section of my first guest post?
if my timeline is correct, that's a roughly pre-parenthood selfie, so i'd tend to assume he's built up a little more crust since then. nowadays the Hawaiian shirts pair with a haggard Alan Moore-esque glower straight into your soul. probably.
pretty sure Uncle Alan was born with that beard... i might be able to muster something half-decent by the time my kids are old enough to be mortified when we're out in public.
You just got a very nice mention in Dougald Hine's newest summer break post as well. Lots to catch up on when you get back from your vacationing!

A well deserved break indeed! Enjoy the summer (and hopefully some ice cream)!
thanks man! your visit will absolutely be one of the highlights. we're looking forward to seeing the three (!) of you very soon.
ha! i knew you'd love that. stopped just short of putting "Dedicated to Jay Rollins" in the caption.
I recommend throwing him for a real loop by complimenting his facial hair. Lurch won't know what hit him.
you mean like your avatar?

completely undeserved comparison, but yes, my thousand-yard stare has progressed considerably since then.
how's the beard full of twigs and birds coming along, though?
pretty sure Uncle Alan was born with that beard... i might be able to muster something half-decent by the time my kids are old enough to be mortified when we're out in public.
i'm also jealous of Miga for being tall, wanna enviously bully him about it?
